The May 2 Collective (2008) --- The May 2 Website is currently under renovation. It will be back online in January 2012.
The May 2 Collective was a group I initiated at Wesleyan University in response to the boringness of the school's overly traditional art department. Our group came together to execute a one-day outdoor art happening.
The Collective sought to escape conventions of space and of rank by showing artwork in an open, outdoor setting and by uniting the categories of artist, curator and organizer. The creative and logistical responsibilities associated with the event were shared by all members of the Collective. We wanted to merge the work of art-making with that of art-evaluating, the imaginative with the administrative, the heart with the brain.
At sundown on the day of the exhibition, the collective was dissolved. The May 2 Collective website (shown above) is intended to re-create the feeling of actually being there--a hazy, unguided hunt for hidden surprises.
